All my life I have painted portraits of people and now I am painting portraits of objects.
I want to provide a conduit from the past to the present. I want things that mattered to us at one time to matter to us again, even if it’s for a different reason. When I paint an old camera, I don’t re-make the camera, I am just creating an illusion that triggers a memory; some other time or place that then produces new thought and emotion combinations in a contemporary context.
My process is called alla prima, also know as wet-on-wet. I place my subject before me and after a copious drawing, I begin the painting as economically as possible, using very few brush stokes, but strokes that are well thought out and considered. I use palette knifes, big brushes and lots of paint.
